The Interfaith Legal Advisers Network

Second Meeting – 16 June 2008

10.30 am - 4.30 pm

Venue: Council Chamber, Main University Building, Museum Avenue, Cathays Park, Cardiff, CF10 3AX

On Monday 16th June 2008, the Centre for Law and Religion held the second meeting of the Interfaith Legal Advisers Network (ILAN) at Cardiff University.

Members of the Interfaith Legal Advisers Network

Network members shared their experiences on how their own religious traditions interact with three areas of law: the law on marriage, including divorce, re-marriage, interfaith marriages and civil partnerships; recent developments in charity law affecting religion; and the impact of new laws on equality and discrimination on grounds of religion or belief and sexual orientation. Papers were presented by Mark Hill, Frank Cranmer and Russell Sandberg.

These topics proved timely given the media coverage of the ceremony conducted by the Revered Martin Dudley at the church of St Bartholomew the Great following the registering of a civil partnership by two Anglican clergy. One newspaper headline on the day the Network met in Cardiff spoke of ‘the Church of England in meltdown’. (The Times, 16 June 2008).

Professor Norman Doe, Director of the Centre of Law and Religion, said. “The Network provides a unique opportunity for advisers from a diverse range of religious traditions to share their experiences and learn from each other. It provides members with a greater understanding of their respective religious legal systems and the common legal issues they face and we anticipate that it will lead to greater interfaith dialogue and highlight areas of law in need of further research.”

It was agreed that the Network should meet again in around six month’s time in London. The working date for this meeting is Monday 19 January 2009.
