The Interfaith Legal Advisers Network

Fifth Meeting (10 October 2011)

The fifth meeting of the Interfaith Legal Advisers Network took place on Monday 10th October at the London offices of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The morning session began with a presentation from the staff at the Commission about its work and the issues which the Commission is currently facing. This session was chaired by Professor Norman Doe. The second session, chaired by Professor Mark Hill QC, saw ILAN members discuss their own concerns in the field of religion, equality and human rights with responses by the staff at the Commission.

The afternoon session consisted of a paper on the State regulation of religious symbols and the approach France presented by Sylvie Bacquet (Senior Lecturer in law, University of Westminster). This was followed by a response by Dr Russell Sandberg who chaired the general discussion that followed it. The day concluded with a session dedicated to future planning which was chaired by Professor Norman Doe. Thanks were expressed to the staff at the Equality and Human Rights Commission for hosting the event and to Sharron Alldred for the detailed organization of the meeting.

The first of its kind in the UK, the Interfaith Legal Advisers Network (ILAN) was established by Cardiff Law School’s Centre of Law and Religion in December 2007. The Network seeks to facilitate an ongoing discussion providing members with a greater understanding of their respective religious legal systems and the common legal issues they face.
