Festival and Festschrift: Celebrating 25 years of the LLM in Canon Law at Cardiff

More than 120 law and religion specialists from all over the world - UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Spain, Middle East, USA, Canada, and Australia - met on 5 and 6 May 2016 at the School of Law and Politics.
They celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of the LLM in Canon Law at Cardiff University, founded in 1991 by Norman Doe, Director of the Centre for Law and Religion at Cardiff. The festival also included the annual conference of the Law and Religion Scholars Network (LARSN), established by the Centre for Law and Religion in 2008 with, today, approaching 300 members worldwide. Approximately fifty papers were delivered in various panels covering a wide range of topics.

The event also saw the launch of a book, published by Cambridge University Press, The Confluence of Law and Religion: Interdisciplinary Reflections on the Work of Norman Doe, edited by Frank Cranmer, Mark Hill QC, Celia Kenny (all LLM in Canon Law graduates) and Russell Sandberg (Senior Lecturer at Cardiff). With a foreword by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, the eighteen chapters are by scholars across the globe, as well as one by Brenda Hale, Deputy President of the Supreme Court of the UK. The book launch was followed by a lecture by Professor David Little (formerly of Harvard University), and, then, a festival dinner at the Glamorgan Building, with a tribute to the LLM from Mark Hill QC, an honorary professor at Cardiff.
The last several LARSN conferences have been organised by Dr Javier Oliva and Dr Helen Hall, and this year by Russell Sandberg and Caroline Roberts.
